Saccharomyces
boulardii is
a non-pathogenic probiotic yeast. S.boulardii has been
well studied for its use in the prevention of gastrointestinal disturbances
often associated with the use of antibiotics. S.boulardii has
also been used in clinical trials in patients with irritable bowel
disorders. Saccharomyces boulardii has been found to
exert many beneficial effects in humans and acts in two principle
ways: first by inhibiting some bacterial toxins or
their effects; and secondly by having direct effects on the intestinal
mucosa.
